This paper aims at providing a description of the characteristics of the usage of the relative pronouns qui and que in the Latin notarial documents produced in the ninth century in the Langobardia Minor. The analysis highlights the wide use of qui, and the narrower range of contexts in which que is selected. These documents consist largely of formulae. This paper shows the importance of the analysis of linguistic microvariation within the formulae for the investigation of the uses and functions of relative pronouns and, more in general, for the analysis of the language of these documents.
