This paper analyses the stem alternations traditionally linked to the opposition infectum vs. perfectum in the verb morphology of notarial documents from two different Lombard areas of Campania in southern Italy and dating from the beginning of the tenth century and the first half of the eleventh. In the framework of a remarkable continuity with previous stages of the language, which confirms the conservative character of the verb morphology often observed in late Latin texts, the analysis allows us to observe some cases displaying overabundance in the realisation of perfect alternants and/or other deviations from ‘classical’ Latin. On this occasion, special attention is firstly devoted to the polymorphism observed in the perfect stem of some irregular verbs, such as offero, and of verbs with reduplicative perfect stem, in particular vendo. Moreover, through the analysis of the verb prehendo and some of its compounds, some traces of the expansion of the -s- perfect stem verb class are examined. Such phenomena, that show interesting potential connection with Romance outcomes, can be analysed in the light both of paradigmatic factors and external, mainly stylistic factors.
