Il dossier agiografico di san Phanourios (BHG 1510): la storia di un santo mai esistito

This study offers a comprehensive analysis of the hagiographical and iconographical sources concerning the origins of the cult of St Phanourios in Rhodes and Crete. The first section highlights new findings regarding the identity and activities of Nicetas Myrsiniotes, who became the Metropolitan of Rhodes at the beginning of the 15th cent. These new data provide a coherent account of the mirac-ulous discovery of the saint’s icon and the early stages of his veneration, first in Rhodes and later in Crete, at the Valsamonerou Monastery. The second section fo-cuses on assessing the historical reliability of St Phanourios’ actual existence, as well as examining the factors and actors that contributed to the consolidation of his cult in Crete.

Cette étude propose une analyse exhaustive des sources hagiogra-phiques et iconographiques concernant l’origine du culte de S. Phanourios à Rhodes et en Crète. Dans la première section, les nouvelles informations relatives à l’identité et aux activités de Nicétas Myrsiniotès, devenu métropolitain de Rhodes au début du XV^e s., permettent de définir de manière cohérente les circonstances de la découverte miraculeuse de l’icône du saint et les premières étapes de sa vénération, d’abord à Rhodes, puis en Crète, au monastère de Valsamonerou. La deuxième partie s’attache à l’examen de la fiabilité historique de l’existence de Phanourios et à l’identification des facteurs et des acteurs ayant conduit à la consolidation de son culte en Crète.
