Abstract

Abstract

Il contributo si focalizza sulla di Cassio Dione allo scopo di indagare come egli percepisse l’evoluzione del ruolo delle donne nella Roma tardorepubblicana e nell’Alto Impero. Lo storico registro la tendenza di alcuni esponenti di spicco del sistema politico a servirsene a partire dalla fine degli anni Settanta del I secolo a.C. per creare alleanze politiche, restituendone l’immagine di figure relegate a posizioni passive, sia pur con alcune eccezioni costituite da Fulvia e dall’egiziana Cleopatra. Per quanto concerne l’alto Impero, Cassio Dione si rese conto che alcune matrone, in primo luogo la moglie di Augusto, Livia, usarono il loro ruolo materno per conseguire posizioni progressivamente piu solide, traendo vantaggio dell’affermarsi di forme autocratiche. E probabile che l’attenzione rivolta all’evolversi della posizione politica delle donne nella corte imperiale del I secolo sia stata influenzata dalla constatazione del ruolo significativo giocato dalle principesse della dinastia dei Severi durante la fase in cui egli compose la

Abstract

The paper focuses on the of Cassius Dio in order to explore his perception of an evolution in the role of women in the late Republican Rome and Early Empire. Dio recorded the tendency of some prominent exponents of the political system of the late Seventies of the first century bc onwards to exploit women in the creation of political alliances, thus providing an image of them as passive players (though with some exceptions shown for instance by Fulvia and Cleopatra). As regards the Early Empire, he realized that some matrons (first of all Augustus’ wife, Livia) used their maternal role to reach an increasingly strong position, taking advantage of the political progress towards autocracy. Dio’s interest in the changing political position of women at the imperial court of the first century might have been influenced by his knowledge of the significant role of the women of the Severan dynasty, during which he was writing his .
