The scant available evidence about Arnobius Junior’s life suggests that he was a prominent figure in the Christian circles of mid-fifth century Rome, well connected to the Roman church and the ascetic, aristocratic milieus of the Vrbs. Yet, at some point of his career Arnobius’ critical stance with regards to Augustine’s views on predestination exposed him to accusations of heresy (Pelagianism). To clear himself of these charges, Arnobius composed the Praedestinatus. In this work, the author relied upon his knowledge of Christian heresiological literature to present his theological antagonists as the members of a ‘Predestinarian sect’. This article analyses the rhetorical devices used by Arnobius to hereticise his opponents.
