f Ambrosiaster’s Revisions of His Commentary on Romans and Roman Synodal Statements about the Holy Spirit

Ambrosiaster’s Commentary on Romans exists is three apparently sequential versions (alpha, beta, and gamma). In alpha and beta Ambrosiaster modifi ed the comments on Romans 1:3 and 8:26-27 to emphasize that the Holy Spirit is divine (against the Pneumatomachians) and that Christ is fully human (against Apollinaris). These changes are examined in light of contemporary Roman synodal letters from the 370s and early 380s. The comments on Romans in alpha appear to belong to a period before 375 and possibly before 371, the changes introduced in beta correspond to theological developments in Rome in the second half of the 370s, and the changes introduced in gamma appear to belong to the early 380s. However, there are still difficulties in the dating of the versions that remain to be resolved.

Le Commentaire à l’Épître aux Romains de l’Ambrosiaster nous est parvenu en trois versions qui sont probablement successives (alpha, beta et gamma). Dans les versions alpha et beta, l’Ambrosiaster a modifié les commentaires à Rom 1, 3 et 8, 26-27 afin de mettre en valeur la divinité de l’Esprit Saint (contre les Pneumatomaques) et la pleine humanité du Christ (contre Apollinaire). Ces changements sont étudiés à la lumière des lettres synodales rédigées dans les années 370-380 à Rome. Les commentaires sur l’Épître aux Romains tels qu’ils apparaissent dans la version alpha semblent dater d’avant 375 et peut-être même d’avant 371. Les changements qui ont été faits dans la version beta répondent aux développements théologiques qui se produisent à Rome dans la seconde moitié des années 370 et les changements qui apparaissent dans la version gamma semblent dater du début des années 380. Cela étant, il reste des problèmes de datation des diverses versions qui requièrent toujours une solution.
