This article deals with the relationship between the Derveni Papyrus and Plato’s Cratylus. This issue is considered in terms of the process of word formation. As a result of this investigation, many analogies and differences come to the fore. In particular, Plato turns out to share several linguistic features with the Derveni Papyrus, although this does not entail a common philosophical account. Plato draws upon the culture also mirrored by the Papyrus by means of a complex strategy of ‘resemantization’.

This article argues that Lyc. Al. 260 constitutes a case of oppositio in imitando. The first part tries to demonstrate that Lycophron uses the Homeric hapax περκνός (Il. 24, 316) in Al. 260 for reasons both exegetic (interpretatio Homerica) and poetic, construing the line as an ‘integrative allusion’ to Il. 21, 252 and Il. 22, 139-142. The second part is focused both on the meaning of περκνός (and μόρφνος) in Il. 24 as this can be reconstructed from ancient sources and on a fragment from Porphyry’s Quaestiones Homericae, which testifies to a discussion of the eagles mentioned in Il. 21 and Il. 24.

The article examines the recent proposal advanced by Giulio Firpo about the placement of Sentinum and the battle fought there in 295. In his opinion, the battle was fought near Piano del Sentino, at Rapolano (Siena). His arguments concern the presence of galatomachies in the area of Clusium, of the Etruscan sentinate family, and of philological problems in Livy, together with general considerations on oral transmission for the Roman historical tradition and on Roman colonisation. Firpo’s hypothesis cannot be accepted, but it has the indisputable merit of pointing out the existence of an otherwise unknown Etruscan settlement, *Sentinum. The battle of Sentinum remains firmly in the modern Sassoferrato (Ancona).

This note argues that in Petron. 64, 4 tonstrinum should be considered as an erroneous gloss that has supplanted the original text. A new conjecture is proposed.

This article focuses on Medea’s speech to Jason at Valerius Flaccus’ Argonautica 8, 415-444 and investigates the legal language the heroine uses in her attempt to safeguard her status as Jason’s legitimate wife according to Roman law. Valerius seems to build Medea’s speech in a way that allows the reader to reconstruct her possible arguments as a Roman wife who defends her rights in a divorce lawsuit, as if she were in a Roman court. It is argued that Valerius was influenced by the declamation schools and that he presented his narrative as a prequel to Ovid’s and Seneca’s accounts, who had developed certain legal aspects in Medea’s protestations against her abandonment by Jason in Corinth.

Suda β 443 (Adler I 486, 13 s. v. Βουλομένῳ) has been ten-tatively assigned to Iamblichus, Babyloniaka, fr. 102 Habrich (= 111 Barbero), and Damascius, Life of Isidorus, fr. 377 Zintzen. These attributions are rejected on linguistic criteria, and the authorship of ClaudiusAelianus is proposed.

The epitaph of Senarius is attested for the first time in Pierre Pithou’s Epigrammata et poematia vetera. A careful examination of the text and Pithou’s volume indicates that the source used by the French scholar was a manuscript or an epigraphic anthology. The inscription probably came from northern Italy, perhaps from Ravenna. The epitaph can be attributed to a learned man who was educated in sixth-century Italy. It was composed not by Senarius, but by a poet who knew Theoderic’s political communication well, possibly Arator. Senarius, who was most likely born in 470 or shortly afterwards, died in the last years of Theoderic’s reign or during the regency of Amalasuintha. The article includes the critical edition of the epitaph, an Italian translation and a detailed commentary.
