L’allegoria come filosofia rivelata. L’incontro fra ragione e fede nell’ellenismo e nell’età imperiale

L’ “allegoria filosofica sistematica” o “allegoresi”, ovvero “possibilità di dire una cosa per intenderne un’altra al fine di esprimere un pensiero più profondo”, si affermò nell’ambito dello stoicismo e permise di applicare sistematicamente strumenti di ermeneutica filosofica ai testi poetici, al fine di interpretare la natura e gli dèi stessi come espressione di concetti ulteriori. Allo stesso modo, anche il ricorso alle etimologie si fondò sulla convinzione che il linguaggio permettesse di scoprire il senso originario delle parole e della realtà, in un rimando al logos inteso come verità delle cose. L’allegoresi venne recepita come prassi ermeneutica dal giudaismo alessandrino: in questo contesto, la necessità di rispettare anche la littera del testo biblico, in quanto scrittura sacra, portò a una dinamica di illuminazione reciproca tra filosofia e testo sacro, da cui conseguì una più ricca comprensione reciproca.

The ‘systematic philosophical allegory’ or ‘allegoresis’ - that is, the ‘possibility to say something, meaning something else, in order to express a deeper thought’ - presented itself within the stoicism milieu, and permitted the adoption of instruments of philosophical hermeneutics on poetical texts, in order to explain nature and the gods as expressions of further concepts. In the same way, the use of etymologies founded on the belief that language could reveal the original sense of words and reality, in reference to logos, understood as truth of the things. Allegoresis was adopted as hermeneutic praxis in the Alexandrine Judaism. In this context, the respect for the littera of the biblical text, as sacred writing, led to a mutual clarification between philosophy and Sacred Scripture, from which derived a richer understanding.
