L’intervento spiega il ruolo di papa Benedetto XV nella prima guerra mondiale e le sue posizioni politiche e umanitarie in ordine al conflitto. La Chiesa cattolica romana, sovranazionale e universalista, si confrontò nel 1914-1918 con il nazionalismo ovunque dominante, anche tra i cattolici. Benedetto XV si trovò isolato nella condanna della guerra e del nazionalismo tra i suoi stessi fedeli europei.

Abstract

The paper explains the role of Pope Benedict XV during the first World War and his political and humanitarian positions. During the conflict, the supranational and universalist Roman Catholic Church faced to the dominant nationalism, also among Catholics. Condeming war and nationalism, Benedict XV remained alone among his own believers.
