Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The paper aims to clarify the dialectic between Italian Catholics and the Holy See in the relationship with the Great War through the observatory of worship. To this end, it crosses public interventions of the Pope with the correspondence between him and the believers (clergy or lay, military or civilian people), who asked him for permission to spread the texts of some prayers or to celebrate special functions related to war. Reconstruction will highlight the attempt of the Pope, more and more systematic and intense, to resize spontaneous nationalistic forms of worship (which meant the invocation of victory for their country) and to promote, on the other hand, the prayer for universal peace. This line was pursued by Benedict XV with consistency and determination, but also in different ways in relation to different moments, environments and contexts.
