The aim of this article is to give an initial overview of the use of the Qur’ān in some nineteenth-century Catholic institutions, such as the Sapienza University, the Collegio Romano, and Collegio Urbano, through what we know of the programmes of their professors, such as Michelangelo Lanci, Vincenzo Castellini, Pius Zingerle, Johann Bollig and Matteo Sciahuan. Starting from the nineteenth century – the golden age of Catholic Orientalism and Arabism, at the end of which Ludovico Marracci’s seminal work the (1698) was published – the article will trace the path of the Qur’ān in eighteenth century curricula, and then show how in the nineteenth century, from initially being a text to be refuted, the Qur’ān gradually became a book used to teach students Arabic. In this way, a practice that was already widespread in the rest of Europe was introduced into the Catholic context.

L’obiettivo di questo articolo è di fornire una panoramica preliminare sull’uso del Corano in alcune istituzioni cattoliche ottocentesche, quali la Sapienza, il Collegio Romano e il Collegio Urbano, attraverso quello che conosciamo dei programmi dei loro professori, come Michelangelo Lanci, Vincenzo Castellini, Pius Zingerle, Johann Bollig e Matteo Sciahuan. Partendo dal XVII secolo – l’epoca d’oro dell’orientalismo e dell’arabismo cattolico, che si concluse con la pubblicazione dell’opera fondamentale di Ludovico Marracci, l’(1698) – l’articolo traccerà il percorso del Corano nei programmi di studio del XVIII secolo, per poi mostrare come nel XIX secolo, da testo da confutare, il Corano divenne gradualmente un libro utilizzato per insegnare la lingua araba agli studenti. In questo modo, una pratica già diffusa nel resto d’Europa fu introdotta anche nel contesto cattolico.
