Abstract

Abstract

Maurenbrecher, adhering to the testimony of Nonius, attributes fr. IV 2 M. (= IV 2 Ramsey) of Sallust’s to the fourth book and considers the context to be that of the desertion of Fannius and Metrophanes, which occurred, in his opinion, in 72 . But the situation imagined by Maurenbrecher is not only not in line with tradition but also contradicts it. Everything suggests that Metrophanes and his companion (probably Magius) were mentioned in connection with the Pontic legation of 75  and that the indication of Nonius should be corrected to .
