This is a formula exclusively attested in Homer and the Homeric Hymns. Furthermore, the specific contexts in which this formula is used are analyzed, with particular attention to a possible dependency of use between both corpora. The study concludes that, while this formula is a common feature in both works, an evolution is evident in its use in the Hymns when compared to the Homeric poems, particularly in terms of the syntactic-pragmatic contexts in which it appears.

These interconnections can be justified by the similarities in the descriptions that are depicted and by the words that link both spaces, which differs from the space depicted by Homer in his description of Cyclops’ cave. In this analysis, the author stresses those elements that connect both characters, Philoctetes and Polyphemus, with the place where they live and the contrast with the civilized world that they confront when Ulysses arrives.

Rumor, invectiva e irreligiosidad: el asesinato de Nicodemo en la oratoria (anti)demosténica

Our analysis focuses on how rumours were suitable for humiliating the opponent and how their combination with irreligious notions turned them into a powerful device for invective. Bearing this in mind, we consider four different variants of this argument, provided by Demosthenes, Aeschines, and Dinarchus.

Nota al fr. IV 2 M. (= IV 2 Ramsey) delle Historiae di Sallustio

(= IV 2 Ramsey) delle Historiae di SallustioAbstractMaurenbrecher, adhering to the testimony of Nonius, attributes fr. IV 2 M. (= IV 2 Ramsey) of Sallust’s Historiae to the fourth book and considers the context to be that of the desertion of Fannius and Metrophanes, which occurred, in his opinion, in 72 bc. But the situation imagined by Maurenbrecher is not only not in line with tradition but also contradicts it. Everything suggests that Metrophanes and his companion (probably Magius) were mentioned in connection with the Pontic legation of 75 bc and that the indication lib. IV of Nonius should be corrected to lib. II.

Antitesi e ribaltamento degli eventi in Ammiano Marcellino: L’esempio di Gallo

The reality that revolves around the figure of Gallus is dominated by the taste of Ammianus for contrast and antithesis; these elements are used by the historian in order to describe a world where truth and falsehood, right and unfair, swap their roles. After he suddenly reached the top of his political power, Gallus acts with cruelty and complete carelessness of justice, stimulated by his wife Constantina, who, however, with her death, also causes the definitive downfall of Caesar. Nevertheless, the end of Gallus, caused by the decisive intervention of Constantius, determines the recovery of that humanitas, which he had lost due to his aspiration to a greater political power.

La metafrasi planudea delle Heroides: strategie traduttologiche e tendenze stilistiche

Reg. gr. 133 = R). The operation can be easily carried out precisely because we dispose of a manuscript penned by the author himself. Therefore, it will be fruitful to derive from the text the most salient traits of the Planudean usus vertendi within the Heroides, also proving a non-negligible translatological autonomy of the polymath.

Progymnasmatic Qualities of Early Modern Art History: Giorgio Vasari’s Uses of Ancient Ekphrasis

Although some authors have pointed out that the father of early art history followed ekphrastic patterns to describe works of art, no studies examine the progymnasmatic influence on Giorgio Vasari’s rhetorical education and art historical writing. Based on the manuals and model ekphraseis that were commonplace at that time, this article surveys the ancient concept of ekphrasis that Latin teachers presumably conveyed to their students. I argue that this notion was most likely influenced not only by Aphthonius’ Progymnasmata but also by byzantine sources, indirect knowledge of Nicholas of Myra’s progymnasmatic explanations on ekphrasis of pictures and sculptures and by collections of model ekphraseis attributed to Libanius. An analysis of Vasarian descriptions provides evidence of progymnasmatic qualities in early modern art history and opens new perspectives for a critical comparison with former art historical texts.

This poetic species underwent an unprecedented development in Renaissance Spain, which is a reflection of the glorious historical moment experienced by the poets of the Golden Age. The Lyra Heroyca (Salamanca, Matias Gast, 1581) by Francisco Núñez de Oria is a clear example of this. This sixteenth-century doctor from Toledo, author of several medical treatises in vernacular Spanish, also dared to compose a long epic Latin poem in fourteen cantos, on the basis of the material provided by Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso, in praise of the kings Charles V and Philip II. The aim of the present article is therefore to justify with arguments that the Aeneid is the main classical source for the seven books that precede the military conflict in Núñez de Oria’s Lyra Heroyca.

Furthermore, it identifies the different operations developed by the author to compose his Medieval History by studying the genealogy of his “pérdida de España” narration.

This galenic approach is approached in both its two aspects, conservation and restoration, with Motor Sciences as one of its main exponents. The purpose of this study is to search for the relationship between medical Humanism and motor skills sciences today, highlighting these important humanistic sources for Medicine but also of great value for Sports Sciences.

Maec. 1.19-20 under a new light, considering the possible presence of a so-called lectio falsa et emendata. This hypothesis will provide a cue for a new emendation to the passage and lead to a metapoetic reading of the distich.
