Abstract
The Aeneid has a long tradition in Spanish literature, especially in the Latin tradition of epic poetry. This poetic species underwent an unprecedented development in Renaissance Spain, which is a reflection of the glorious historical moment experienced by the poets of the Golden Age. The Lyra Heroyca (Salamanca, Matias Gast, 1581) by Francisco Núñez de Oria is a clear example of this. This sixteenth-century doctor from Toledo, author of several medical treatises in vernacular Spanish, also dared to compose a long epic Latin poem in fourteen cantos, on the basis of the material provided by Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso, in praise of the kings Charles V and Philip II. The aim of the present article is therefore to justify with arguments that the Aeneid is the main classical source for the seven books that precede the military conflict in Núñez de Oria’s Lyra Heroyca.
