Josephus at Saint Victor: A First Edition of Andrew of Saint Victor’s Principatum Israelitice gentis

The works of the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus were widely popular among medieval Christians. They used his Antiquitates as a source for the literal interpretation of the Old Testament narrative, and his Bellum Judaicum as a vindication of the Christian faith against the Jews. Josephus’s Jewish identity could cut both ways; while some Christian authors, such as Richard of Saint Victor, regarded him with suspicion and warned against the almostcanonical status his writings enjoyed, for others, his Jewish identity enhanced his credibility as a first-hand historical witness. This article presents the editio princeps of Andrew of Saint Victor’s Principatum Israelitice gentis, an example of the latter use of Josephus’s writings.

Les travaux de l'historien juif Flavius Josèphe jouissaient d’une grande popularité auprès des auteurs chrétiens du Moyen Âge. Ils utilisèrent ses Antiquitates pour les aider à interpréter littéralement le récit de l'Ancien Testament et son Bellum Judaicum pour justifier le bienfondé de la foi chrétienne par rapport à celle des juifs. L’identité juive de Josèphe jouait un rôle ambivalent dans ces travaux; certains auteurs chrétiens, comme Richard de Saint-Victor, le regardaient avec suspicion et mettaient en garde contre le statut presque canonique de ses écrits tandis que, pour d’autres, sa judéité ajoutait à sa crédibilité comme témoin historique de première main.
