Abstract

Today French plays a small role in the linguistic repertoire of the Waldensian Valleys of Piedmont. The article describes the historical and cultural conditions that led to the introduction of this language into the Waldensian context during the 16th century, also outlining the evolution of the role that language has played in these places during the time: from language of culture until the beginning of the 20th century, French has gradually become the language of family intimacy in some communities of the Pellice Valley.
