Lendemains francais d’Humani generis

L’encyclique Humani generis du 12 août 1950 réprouve certaines « opinions fausses » qui menaceraient le dogme catholique. Nombre de commentateurs estiment, à juste titre, qu’elle vise en particulier des philosophes et des théologiens français. Publiquement, ceux-ci font acte de soumission au document. Mais en privé ? Divers fonds d’archives sont ici mobilisés pour montrer que cette belle unanimité présente quelques lézardes. Des intellectuels catholiques français, clercs ou laïcs, et non des moindres, s’estiment indemnes des critiques pontificales et regrettent le coup d’arrêt qu’elles risquent de signifier pour la recherche philosophique et théologique.

The encyclical Humani generis of 12 August 1950 condemns certain « false opinions » that threaten Catholic dogma. Many commentators rightly believe that it is aimed in particular at French philosophers and theologians. Publicly, they are submitting to the document. But in private? Various archive collections are used here to show that there are a few cracks in this fine unanimity. Some French Catholic intellectuals, clerics and laymen alike, and not the least of them, considered themselves unaffected by the pontifical criticisms and regretted the halt they threatened to bring to philosophical and theological research.

Die Enzyklika Humani generis vom 12. August 1950 verurteilt bestimmte « falsche Meinungen », die das katholische Dogma bedrohen würden. Viele Kommentatoren vertreten zu Recht die Ansicht, dass sich die Enzyklika namentlich gegen französische Philosophen und Theologen richtet. In der Öffentlichkeit unterwerfen sich diese dem Dokument. Aber wie sieht es im privaten Rahmen aus ? Für diese Frage werden verschiedene Archivbestände ausgewertet, um zu zeigen, dass diese schöne Einmütigkeit einige Risse aufweist. Französische katholische Intellektuelle, Geistliche wie Laien, und nicht die geringsten, fühlen sich von der päpstlichen Kritik nicht betroffen und bedauern, dass diese der philosophischen und theologischen Forschung einen Riegel vorschieben könnte.
