This paper examines some of the characteristics of Langlandian personification. Beginning with a brief look at the interpolations in The Cook’s Tale found in Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Bodley 686, this paper goes on to consider the notable lack of visual description linked to the personifications in Piers Plowman, as well as the comparative emphasis on sound and voice that distinguishes Langland’s use of personification.
