Aspects of the Poetry of Ennodius
Since the end of the last century Ennodius has been the object of increasing interest among scholars of late antiquity. Developments in Ennodian criticism are also addressed in this volume that presents the results of more than twenty years of research on the relationship – always dialectical and not infrequently innovative – that Ennodius maintains as a poet with the Latin literary tradition both profane and Christian. The chapters of the book revisit – in English and in one case with substantial modifications – eight of the author’s previously published papers on Ennodius along with one unpublished contribution.
Areas that have been specifically investigated include the functions that he assigns to poetry compared to those he assigns to prose his original re-treatment of some literary genres and his thematic stylistic lexical and metric choices. The last chapter explores the literary influence exerted by Ennodius’ poetry on the text of his epitaph. The very fact that its unknown author – certainly a great admirer of the deceased – did his best to imitate his style is a significant testimony to the prestige that Ennodius enjoyed after his death in the diocese of Pavia of which he had been the bishop.

The exemplum held immense power in antiquity especially in the political field. What role did historical or legendary figures from the Greco-Roman past play during the Empire in speeches intended to build legitimise or question power? How were they selected? How did they work? These are the questions that the eighteen contributions in this volume seek to answer. This multifaceted approach crosses several literary genres including poetry historiography and political or philosophical discourse which are examined over six centuries. It considers different types of power or authority (imperial power but also the authority of the magistrate in the Greek city during Roman domination and the power of bishops). This highlights the plasticity of exempla that depending on the context could justify or question a vast diversity of ideologies and practices of power.

Authorship and Commentaries on Poetry / Autorproblematik und antike Dichterexegese
Ancient commentaries on poetry - due to their heteronomous nature their miscellaneous character and the fact that most of them are transmitted in abridged and anonymous form - are usually not considered ‘authorial’ texts in the same way as poems or literary prose are. On the other hand as didactic texts they rely on authority to convey their interpretation and they also often seem to have been perceived as products of authorial activity as paratexts references and pseudepigraphic attributions demonstrate.
The aim of this volume is to explore this tension and to examine commentaries and scholia on poetry in terms of authorship and ‘authoriality’. The contributions use several Latin and Greek corpora as case studies to shed light on how these texts were read how they display authorial activity themselves and how they fulfil their function as didactic works. They provide reflections on the relationship of author authorship and authority in ‘authorless’ traditions explore how authorial figures and authorial viewpoints emerge in an implicit manner in spite of the stratified nature of commentaries investigate the authorial roles adopted by commentators compilers and scribes and elucidate how commentators came to be perceived as authors in other exegetic traditions.

With an investigation into the landscapes and environments – real topical imaginary recalled and traversed by Propertius’ elegies – the contributors focus on the poet’s complex relationship not only with the images of the literary tradition and with those of artistic culture but also with the images Rome Italy and the Mediterranean offered him in his days. This results in the outlines of an original ‘imaginary’ in which the power of personal creation has given Assisi Rome and the Empire a form going beyond the limits of time and space.

Aspects of the Reception of Ovid in Literature and Iconography
The 2000th anniversary of Ovid’s death in 2017-2018 led to an upsurge in conferences and publications dedicated to the author’s work and afterlife. One of these is the present volume resulting from the conference Dopo Ovidio. Aspetti della ricezione ovidiana fra letteratura e iconografia which was held on 7-8 May 2019 at the Department of Human Sciences (DSU) of the University of L’Aquila and which looked at various aspects of Ovid’s fortune from a diachronic and interdisciplinary perspective. The contributions cover a period of about fourteen centuries from late antiquity until the end of the eighteenth century and range from late Latin to medieval literature from humanistic production to modern English and Italian literature and from linguistics to the figurative arts. All these studies contribute to a collective appraisal of the multifarious impact of Ovid’s works and especially of the Metamorphoses the latter’s treatment of myth having been a starting point for integrations developments (re)interpretations and representations in isolation or included in an iconographic program.

Author Images and the Reading of Ancient Literature / Autorbilder und die Lektüre antiker Literatur
The leitmotif of this volume is the concept of “author images” which is used in modern literary studies to describe processes of production and reading of literary works and is here applied for the first time to the study of ancient works. As a means of analysing ancient literature it captures the aspect of personification which is characteristic of ancient author concepts and at the same time points to the fact that there is a difference between “image” and “author” and that it is only an image and not the author himself that can be seen and grasped by readers.
This makes the “author image” particularly suitable for examining the intersections of material rhetorical and mental representations of literary authorship that form the subject of this volume. Using selected examples from Latin and Greek literature the contributors explore the fields of cultural experience that nourish authorial images. They discuss the manifold possibilities of visualising and representing a person’s quality of being an author in general or being an author of specific works be it physically through artworks or pictures metaphorically through evoked authorial figures through thematised representations of authors in a text or through the combination of authorial images and texts.
These issues are addressed in four overlapping sections each focusing on different areas of the metaphor’s application namely material images in the form of artworks knowledge about persons textual images as authorial strategies and images in reception.
Le sens des textes classiques au Moyen Âge
Transmission, exégèse, réécriture
De l’Italie lombarde à l’Italie humaniste de la renaissance carolingienne à celle de la France et de l’Angleterre aux xii e-xiii e siècles ce volume se propose d’interroger une thématique connue - celle de la fortune des auteurs classiques latins au Moyen Âge - à partir de quelques perspectives nouvelles et en multipliant les types d’approche. Organisées autour de trois axes - la transmission l’exégèse et la réécriture - douze contributions s’intéressent à la manière dont les textes de l’Antiquité tant en prose qu’en poésie ont été cités commentés et réemployés au fil des siècles afin de conserver le patrimoine du passé tout en l’infléchissant pour atteindre des buts nouveaux.
En s’attachant à des produits littéraires variés des œuvres originales à l’univers des gloses des commentaires des florilèges et des miscellanées cette sélection raisonnée d’enquêtes montre comment les auteurs classiques ont connu une vie nouvelle - celle qui les a conduits jusqu’à nous - grâce à la copie et aux échanges à la redécouverte fortuite ou à une renommée solide à travers l’emprunt occasionnel ou le dépouillement systématique l’excerption l’adaptation et les vraies erreurs d’interprétation. Méthode philologique critique littéraire et recherche historique se combinent avec une attention particulière pour les modalités concrètes de la lecture et de l’exploitation des Anciens et conduisent à de multiples approfondissements sur la genèse matérielle et intellectuelle de certaines œuvres : parmi elles plusieurs doivent encore faire l’objet de travaux de première main dont on donne ici les tout premiers résultats.
Réécritures et adaptations de l’Ovide moralisé (xiv e-xvii e siècle)
L’Ovide moralisé a joué un rôle significatif pour la connaissance des mythes antiques et la création de nouvelles œuvres littéraires qui se les approprient au moins jusque dans la première moitié du xvi e siècle avant qu’il ne soit moqué et condamné. Dès son écriture au xiv e siècle cette traduction en langue française des Métamorphoses d’Ovide accompagnée d’interprétations chrétiennes a rapidement connu le succès et une diffusion large auprès de publics divers qui la lisaient souvent elle et ses gloses plutôt que l’œuvre latine d’Ovide. De nombreux auteurs en français en latin ou en anglais se sont inspirés de son texte pour créer leurs propres représentations littéraires de héros et héroïnes antiques dans des œuvres poétiques didactiques et historiographiques ou pour élaborer leurs écritures de la moralisation. Les deux mises en prose de l’Ovide moralisé à la cour d’Anjou et à la cour de Bourgogne les réécritures et remaniements qui sont ensuite imprimés la traduction anglaise imprimée par William Caxton ont aussi contribué à prolonger l’influence qu’il a exercée. Cette dernière se lit aussi sans nul doute dans certaines des nouvelles traductions des Métamorphoses qui sont composées au xvi e siècle. Si cette influence a souvent été notée si des emprunts de poètes du xiv e et du xv e siècles - Guillaume de Machaut Jean Froissart Eustache Deschamps Christine de Pizan Chaucer Gower - ont été étudiés la postérité de l’Ovide moralisé reste encore pour une large part à explorer. C’est l’objet de ce volume collectif le premier qui soit consacré à la réception du texte du xive au xviie siècle.

Lire et commenter les discours de l’Énéide dans l’Antiquité tardive
En devenant le principal support pédagogique des grammatici l’œuvre de Virgile a joué un rôle central dans la formation intellectuelle de la jeunesse lors de l’Antiquité romaine tardive y compris dans la formation rhétorique : les discours - principalement ceux de l’Énéide - ont fourni aux commentateurs du grand poète l’occasion d’expliquer des notions rhétoriques et d’analyser des exemples précis de situations oratoires. Les contributions du présent volume explorent les différentes facettes de cet art virgilien de la parole tel qu’il a été compris par les professionnels de la littérature et de l’éducation de l’Antiquité tardive.

Le mariage dans la littérature latine (iii e s. av. – vi e s. ap. J.-C.)
Comment les Romains parlaient-ils du mariage ? Cette question a été posée à vingt et un spécialistes de littérature latine archaïque classique post-classique et tardive dans le but de comparer la rhétorique discursive des Romains à propos d’une institution qui occupe une place de choix dans la société. Ce volume collectif offre des analyses du motif du mariage tel qu’il est traité dans les textes littéraires et juridiques au prisme de genres variés (comédie déclamation élégie épigramme genre épistolaire épopée historiographie poésie épidictique satire tragédie textes patristiques traités philosophiques) mais au-delà de l’épithalame c’est-à-dire en dehors ou à la frontière de ces discours de circonstance très étudiés depuis vingt ans tout en tenant compte de leur apport rhétorique poétique et idéologique. Si le mariage est avant tout pour les Romains un moyen de perpétuer par cette alliance une lignée et d’accroître le corps civique sa représentation est plurielle. Elle se montre en constante interaction avec le projet littéraire propre à chaque auteur le genre qui la véhicule les modèles suivis ou encore le contexte socio-politique religieux et juridique de l’époque de production du texte. De ces études variées émerge une vision d’ensemble diachronique sur les permanences et évolutions de la pensée et du discours romains à propos de la notion de couple des relations entre époux du rôle de la femme de la place des enfants de la part de l’eros conjugal et des sentiments dans le mariage.

Tito Livio e la sua eredità
This book stems from a conference on Livy held at the University of Padua on the occasion of the bimillenary of the historian’s death (6-10 November 2017). The aim of the volume is to shed new light on lesser-known aspects of Livy’s historiography by approaching his work from a broad and interdisciplinary perspective. The papers written by established scholars as well as by younger researchers span from classical philology to ancient history and archaeology also incorporating an in-depth investigation of Livy’s reception through the centuries (from the Middle Ages to the Modern Era) and different fields of the humanities (philosophy political thought figurative arts).

Interesado en las hazañas de los grandes caudillos de la Antigüedad el aragonés Alfonso de Liñán (†1468) tradujo las Historiae Alexandri Magni de Quinto Curcio al castellano a partir de la versión italiana de Pier Candido Decembrio. El texto se conserva todavía en la Biblioteca Nacional de España bajo la signatura BNE Mss/7565. Testimonio valioso para el estudio de la traducción medieval y sus funciones el códice recuerda sobre todo la fascinación de aquel lectorado por Alejandro Magno ya conocido en la literatura castellana desde el Libro de Alexandre. En los albores del Renacimiento el macedonio va a ser un modelo para una nobleza que debe definirse bajo nuevos criterios. El presente volumen ofrece el estudio y la edición de esta traducción y desvela los intereses de un noble aragonés por la figura alejandrina.
Polemics and Networking in Graeco-Roman Antiquity
Disagreement rivalry and dispute are essential to any intellectual development. This holds true for ancient cultures no less than for us today. From the classical period to the Hellenistic age and to Late Antiquity competition and polemics have shaped the course of intellectual history in Antiquity. Polemical encounters and controversies are often linked to group identities and intellectual networks such as philosophical schools textual traditions artistic circles and religious communities. This collection of studies sprang from the ambition to study the interplay between polemics and intellectual networks from a variety of perspectives and disciplines.
The volume gathers fifteen case studies by leading scholars and young researchers alike. They address a wide range of topics from the Old Academy and the Hellenistic schools to the Neoplatonic commentators of Late Antiquity from biographical literature to literary criticism from artistic manuals to scientific treatises and from pagans to Christians. As multi-sided as the picture that emerges from these case studies may be they all testify to the fact that implicit and explicit polemics are ubiquitous in ancient Greek and Roman literature and have served as triggers of intellectual progress across times and disciplinary boundaries.
Nota-reseña: Ovidio metamorfoseado (A propósito de las Heroidas en la versión catalana de Guillem Nicolau, ca. 1388)
The recent publication of the medieval Catalan translation of the Heroids prompts to reflect on crucial questions of literary history and philology: the close and necessary relationship between them and the importance of the study of translations in order to understand Hispanic medieval literatures. Ovid’s impact must be assessed in terms of his presence in Hispanic cultures as a whole and these must be placed within the framework of the European dissemination of Heroids. Moreover the Heroids come to be a touchstone which reveals the important role played by female readers in the promotion and dissemination of Classical tradition in Romance languages a fact that cannot be overlooked when studying the so-called vernacular Humanism in the Iberian Peninsula.

The manuscript RAH Aemilianensis 60 (end of the 9th century) famous for including the “glosas emilianenses” (10th-11th century) contains in fols. 64r-67r an Interrogatio de nobissimo a short millenarian text which is presented as the prophecy of a bishop named Alexander to the king Aristotle. Our article offers some hypotheses about this invention relating it to the pseudo-Aristotelian epistolary tradition; it also attempts to insert the prophecy into the literary tradition of the Pseudo-Methodius the Apocalypse of Daniel the Visio Pauli the Tiburtine Sibyl and some related texts as well as in a possible Islamic context (Dajjal's description).
Scribal glosses and hidden auctores in the manuscripts of Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde
It would be an arduous task to compile all the academic research ever published about Chaucer and his use of sources in the creation of Troilus and Criseyde. But there are still many aspects of Chaucer’s relationship with his sources that have been left largely unexplored. In particular there is yet much to unearth in how the scribes Chaucer’s earliest readers and fundamental agents in the shaping of the poem as we know it now mediated the allusions that Chaucer openly or otherwise introduces in his text. In this paper I explore the different scribal approaches to two of the most notable Latin sources of Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde: the portraits of Troilus Criseyde and Diomede in Joseph of Exeter’s Daretis Phrygii Ylias de bello troiano and the summary of the twelve books of the Thebaid. The annotations analyzed in this article allow us a unique glimpse into the process of composition of the poem as well as the twists and turns of its textual history and the expectations had by all the agents involved in the creation transmission and interpretation of Troilus and Criseyde. Furthermore they illuminate different aspects of the familiarity of the reading public with the classical authors in fifteenth-century England.
O ‘liuro da troya’ no Livro da Virtuosa Benfeitoria do Infante D. Pedro: uma recepção indirecta da General Estoria de Afonso X?
The impact that Alfonso X’s General Estoria had at the court of Avis is made evident in João I’s Livro da Montaria through quotations in Gomes Eanes de Zurara’s Crónica dos feitos da Guiné and the identification of a “Estoria Geral” in the inventory of King Duarte’s library. A new reading of the Infante D. Pedro’s Livro da Virtuosa Benfeitoria provides an interesting metaliterary reference offering what appears to be another indirect influence of Alfonso X’s universal chronicle. This study analyses an allusion in that work to a “liuro da troya” leading to considerations about narrative modes in the lnfante D. Pedro’s treatise.
