Abstract

Abstract

Giuseppe Scattolin (1942–), Italian orientalist and scholar of Sufism, sought to establish a new religious philosophy to help people living in the present era to overcome the negative ramifications of globalization. His religious philosophy is notably based on several elements, perhaps the most prominent of which is the link between Sufism and religious dialogue. Despite being of Italian origin and language, He tried his hand at Arabic in the first publication of his research work and books, without having previously published them in any European language. The present study, therefore, raises questions about his new philosophy and its concepts and methodologies. It tries to illustrate how Scattolin re-proposed the concepts of and in such a scholarly manner that formed his religious philosophy, while investigating whether his treatment was consistent with the nature and content of the concept of , or it was imposing and incongruent such that the concept itself does not tolerate. Noticing that, in twenty–five years of research, he published numerous and varied Arabic articles and books on Islamic Sufism, not translated from any European language, the researcher examined how these writings were received by Arab and Muslim readers, intellectuals, and specialists, and how far the writings affected contemporary Arab and Islamic thought. The main research question here is whether his writings attempted to establish a new religious philosophy, and, if so, what characterized this philosophy.
