Abstract

Abstract

This article analyses the entry in some biographical dictionaries of the modern age (eighteenth-nineteenth century): from Pierre Bayle’s dictionary to Johnson’ and Chalmers’, up to Felice Scifoni’. The analysis shows how the fifth-century Christian author Orosius continues to be considered an illustrious man in the modern age, even though the Orosian Studies want him to be forgotten in that period. At the same time, Orosius’s biography seems to be “canonical” in those dictionaries, while the description of his historical work, the , is certainly more complex and controversial.
