Abstract
Abstract
This paper aims to study the overlapping of irreligious vocabulary, rhetoric, and a rumour widely used against Demosthenes – his alleged cooperation in the murder of Nicodemus. Our analysis focuses on how rumours were suitable for humiliating the opponent and how their combination with irreligious notions turned them into a powerful device for invective. Bearing this in mind, we consider four different variants of this argument, provided by Demosthenes, Aeschines, and Dinarchus.
