Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The article attempts to reconstruct the literary environment where pseudotranslation was flourishing as a specific form of allegiance to a foreign textual model. On the one hand, pseudo-translation is considered as a part of the general phenomenon of mystification characteristic of major novelistic subgenres in the eighteenth-century, such as fictional Memoirs and letters. On the other hand, the interaction between pseudo and real translation is examined, showing a particular configuration in which the former may paradoxically provide a rhetorical and an aesthetic model to the latter.
