Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The antirrhetical texts written by Nicephorus of Constantinople, known as three and form a sole great treatise composed with the intention to refute the theology and the of the first iconoclasm. A detailed review of the manuscript tradition led to understand in which manner, following different ancient editions with marginal notes, each part of the treaty has received a title and has been divided into chapters in order to allow for a more easy reading of the text. This process has been accomplished during the 9th century and done again at the moment of later copies. After a series of publications of some excerpts from the treaty in the 17th and 18th centuries, almost only in a Latin translation, the various parts of this work were finally published separately in the 19th century each from the other and in a different order than that of the original. Thus, the editorial work has finally concealed the unity of this monumental treatise.
