Phoenician “identity”: methodological approach, historical perspective

The term “identity” has recently seen an increase in popularity in various humanities and social sciences, to the extent that today more than ever its meaning and use are the subject of a very lively debate, above all in the anthropological field. The present contribution, then, aims to reflect on the application of the word “identity” specifically in historical research and, particularly, in relation to Phoenician studies. The question these notes would like to answer is whether and how the term can constitute an operative category-whether, therefore, it is truly functional.

Le terme « identité » a connu récemment un certain succès dans les différentes disciplines des sciences humaines, à tel point qu’aujourd’hui sa signification et son utilisation deviennent l’objet de débats très vifs, surtout dans les domaines anthropologiques. La présente note a ainsi pour objectif de réfléchir sur l’emploi du terme « identité » dans l’analyse historique, en particulier en relation avec les études phéniciennes. La question à laquelle cette note voudrait répondre est de savoir si et comment ce terme peut constituer une catégorie opérationnelle, et s’il est réellement fonctionnel.
