This paper investigates the impact of Graeco-Roman social culture on Philo’s interpretation of Mosaic law in his , taking as a case study the influence of imperial customary prescriptions on his rewriting of specific laws regarding womanly behavior (Dt 25:11-12). The analysis first underlines a discrepancy between the biblical verse and Philo’s interpretation, and then emphasizes similarities to Roman sumptuary laws and first imperial literature, thereby enhancing the nature of the treatise in Philo’s .

Abstract

L’article étudie les effets du contexte social gréco-romain sur l’interprétation de la loi mosaïque par Philon dans son ouvrage , en prenant comme cas d’étude l’influence des prescriptions coutumières impériales sur sa réécriture des lois concernant le comportement féminin (Dt 25,11-12). L’analyse met en lumière la divergence entre le verset biblique et son interprétation chez Philon, ainsi que les similitudes entre les lois somptuaires romaines et la première littérature impériale, ce qui renforce la nature du traité dans le de Philon.
