Abstract

Abstract

The episode of Gallus in the XIV book of Ammianus Marcellinus’ gives a view of a twisted reality, which is characterized by the alternation of contradictory situations, that the historian represents through a wise use of words and images. The reality that revolves around the figure of Gallus is dominated by the taste of Ammianus for contrast and antithesis; these elements are used by the historian in order to describe a world where truth and falsehood, right and unfair, swap their roles. After he suddenly reached the top of his political power, Gallus acts with cruelty and complete carelessness of justice, stimulated by his wife Constantina, who, however, with her death, also causes the definitive downfall of Caesar. Nevertheless, the end of Gallus, caused by the decisive intervention of Constantius, determines the recovery of that , which he had lost due to his aspiration to a greater political power.
