Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Leading figure of the liberal opposition during the first Empire, Germaine de Staël was soon ostracized by Napoleon, who moved her away from Paris in 1803, before ordering her to leave France in 1810. The writer’s correspondence immediately shows her struggling with a new difficulty : that of addressing the utterly indescribable notion of exile. Suffering from her imprisonment in Coppet, she ends up defying the vigilance of the agents of the regime in 1812, only to embark on a journey that sees her crossing Austria, Russia and Sweden to reach England. Free at last to take up her pen, she undertakes a manuscript where she can address exile in a unique way, so that there is an exceptional link between the common fate of those oppressed by Napoleon’s yoke, and the uniqueness of her destiny - that of an outlaw that had to make her exile an unprecedented opportunity to broaden her words and influence throughout Europe.
