Notes on reciprocal constructions in Akkadian in light of typological and historical considerations

This paper discusses various aspects of reciprocal constructions in Akkadian. Typological observations allow us first to recognize and then to better understand the various diachronic developments occurring in the history of Akkadian. Thus, starting with the main distinction between the verbal and the pronominal constructions, and considering the pronominal strategies found in the history of Akkadian, I examine the various syntactic distinctions between the one-unit and the two-unit pronominal constructions, and note that each belong to different periods. Considering the history of the pronominal expressions, proposals for the origins of each of the various constructions have been made. Similarly I examine the semantic differences between the verbal and the pronominal encodings, and use the conclusions of the these discussions to explain the fact that verbal construction seems to appear more frequently in the earlier periods and less later.

Cet article se propose d’étudier divers aspects des constructions de réciprocité en akkadien. Des observations typologiques nous permettent tout d’abord de reconnaître, puis de mieux comprendre les divers déploiements diachroniques de l’histoire de l’akkadien. Ainsi, en commençant avec la principale distinction entre les constructions verbales et pronominales et en prenant en considération les stratégies pronominales trouvées dans l’histoire de l’akkadien, j’examine les différentes distinctions syntaxiques entre les constructions pronominales à une ou deux unités et je note que chacune appartient à des périodes différentes. En tenant compte de l’histoire des expressions pronominales, des suggestions ont été avancées quant aux origines de chacune des différentes constructions. De la même façon, j’examine les différences sémantiques entre le codage verbal et pronominal et me sers de ces conclusions afin d'expliquer le fait que la construction verbale semble apparaître plus frequemment dans les périodes antérieures et moins a des époques plus tardives.
