Readings attributed to “οἱ περὶ (τὸν) Ἀκύλαν and/or (τὸν) Σύμμαχον” by Greek Christian scribes and authors (Theodoret excepted)

Throughout the corpus of Greek Christian literature, several attestations can be found of the expression οἱ περὶ (τὸν) Ἀκύλαν and/or (τὸν) Σύμμαχον. Having been used by Church Fathers and copyists of manuscripts alike, these attributions make out an interesting object of study, seeing that - in general - the turn of phrase οἱ περὶ followed by the accusative of a proper name can have different meanings and given the fact that it is not always clear if and how these specific attributions refer to the Jewish Greek Bible versions of Aquila, Symmachus and Theodotion. In an earlier study, the occurrences of this expression in the writings of Theodoret of Cyrrhus have been investigated. The present article examines its attestations in other sources (Origen; Epiphanius of Salamis; Theodore of Mopsuestia; Anastasius of Sinai; some anonymous catena fragments and a few marginal notes in Septuagint manuscripts) and investigates how they should be dealt with by editors of Hexaplaric readings.

On trouve, dans la littérature grecque chrétienne, plusieurs occurrences de l'expression οἱ περὶ (τὸν) Ἀκύλαν et/ou (τὸν) Σύμμαχον. La signification de cette tournure, qui est utilisée par les Pères aussi bien que par les copistes des manuscrits de la Bible, n'est pas toujours claire. En effet, les mots οἱ περὶ suivis par l'accusatif d'un nom propre peuvent souvent avoir plusieurs sens. De plus, on ne sait pas très bien si (ou comment) ces attributions se réfèrent aux versions grecques juives de la Bible créées par Aquila, Symmaque et Théodotion. Les occurrences de cette expression dans l'oeuvre de Théodoret de Cyr ont déjà été étudiées auparavant. Dans cet article, nous examinons comment d'autres auteurs (Origène; Épiphane de Salamine; Théodore de Mopsueste; Anastase le Sinaïte; quelques fragments anonymes dans les chaînes exégétiques grecques et certaines notes dans les marges des manuscrits de la Septante) l'ont utilisée, en étant attentif à la question de savoir comment les éditeurs des fragments des Hexaples devraient l'interpréter.
