The reception of God’s Torah in the Pentateuch: a preliminary study of how later sections of Numbers understood divine law

This essay investigates Nm 15 as an exemplary text for understanding the function of divine pentateuchal law in the late Persian-period community that composed or compiled this. The chapter views all the ordinances of the Pentateuch as having the same level of importance, such that breaking any one of them should bring about divine judgment. The chapter accomplishes this goal through a complex updating of earlier pentateuchal traditions and through the interweaving of rituallegal and narrative material.

Cette contribution analyse Nombres 15 en tant que texte clé pour comprendre la fonction de la loi divine dans le contexte de la communauté responsable de la composition ou de la rédaction du texte à la fin de l’époque perse. La nouveauté introduite par ce chapitre par rapport à d’autres textes légaux de la Bible hébraïque est que toutes les ordonnances du Pentateuque sont ici présentées comme ayant le même niveau d’importance. Par conséquent, la violation d’une de ces ordonnances, quelle qu’elle soit, est censée entraîner un même jugement divin. Le texte atteint cet objectif par deux procédés stratégiques : une mise à jour complexe de traditions antérieures du Pentateuque et une combinaison des matériaux de nature rituelle-juridique et narrative.
