Dieux métallurgistes : Kothar, Tubal Caïn et l’image de Bès

Développant ce que les textes mythologiques d’Ougarit laissent percevoir de la personnalité complexe du dieu orfèvre Kothar Khasis « l’avisé », cet article puise dans la tradition biblique avec le personnage de Tubal Caïn, héros négatif de la lignée de Caïn. Comme Héphaïstos de la tradition classique, ou comme le dieu connu des égyptologues sous le nom (tardif) de Bès, ces personnages un peu magiciens allient à leur maîtrise des métaux enfermés dans la terre le règne sur l’harmonie des nombres et la force prophétique induite par la musique et la danse.

Ugaritic literature is notoriously obscure. This paper attempts to shed more light on Kothar Khasis, “the wise” god of metallurgy, by looking at the biblical figure of Tubal-cain, negative hero of the line of Cain. Like Hephaestus of the classical tradition, and the deity known to modern Egyptologists as Bes, these mythological magician-entities share a mastery of precious metals, powers over the harmony of numbers and the prophetic forces of music and dance.
