AbstractUnderstanding the meaning of love is no simple matter. In this article we propose to re-read one of saint John of the Cross’ works in the light of “eros”. In our first part (reproduced here) we shall establish the basis for this re-reading through an analysis of the notions of love and eros in general. We shall then look at the particular use of these terms in John of the Cross. This process should enable us to approach the Spiritual Canticle B in a new light.

AbstractThe present essay proposes a study of the individuals who became part of the Order of Discalced Carmelite Friars in Mexico. This study examines the Book of Professions from the San Sebastian Convent, rather than trying to show the history of the religious order. I show, as thoroughly as the source allows, how many individuals became part of the Order at the convent in Mexico, and who they were, where they and their families were from, their ages when entering the Order, what social condition they belonged to, their scholarship, how many persevered in the Order, and which devotions they manifested through their chosen religious name.

The Trial of Faith of Saint Thérèse

Thérèse’s trial of faith continued until the moment of her death. Not surprisingly, this has spawned a variety of divergent interpretations by theologians concerning the significance of her trial. The present contribution undertakes to study the trial of faith of Saint Thérèse through the prism of her own description and interpretation, especially as a participation in Jesus’ thirst manifested from the cross.

AbstractIn her spiritual treatise, Heaven in Faith, Elisabeth of the Trinity, while providing us with a spiritual doctrine relative to Praise of glory, also offers us an original approach to pneumatology. Her treatise, constructed like a musical score in synchrony with the cyclical form, places the characteristics of this pneumatology between a meditation on Baptism and a meditation on the Eucharist. It is a pneumatology which is related to a theology of the sacraments and to a euchology of Confirmation. It is indirectly grounded in the notions of epectase and the experience of the cloud in saint Gregory of Nyssa, leading to a renewed perception of the internal dynamics of the sacraments of initiation and to a rediscovery of the gift of self as a place of trinitarian experience.

AbstractIn accordance with his charism : « Guiding souls to divine union », blessed Fr. Marie-Eugene of the Child-Jesus explains that it is necessary for all the baptized to become more and more docile to the Spirit both in contemplation and in action in order to reach the heights of holiness. This spiritual growth requires a constant nurturing of faith in the active presence of the Spirit. Fr. Marie-Eugene’s pratical experience of the theology of the theological virtues and the gifts of the Holy Spirit enables him to bring to light the active and receptive (mystical) aspects of baptismal grace. Within the dynamics of the mystical life, the progressive domination of the Spirit brings out the numerous « antinomies », the « nights » which always accompany spiritual growth. For the newly Beatified, the essential reality is « to be seized by God, transformed by the Spirit ».

Misericordia come amore preveniente.

L’esperienza di Maria e dei dottori carmelitani show Less to hide fulltext, buy and share links for: Misericordia come amore preveniente.
AbstractThe present contribution is an attempt to explore the movement of divine mercy from the core of the Trinity to our inner self as it is revealed in Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and in the experience of the Carmelite doctors. Mercy is fundamentally anticipating love, a love that is poured out freely, prior to any answer or human activity. In mercy, God surprises the creature in an overflowing of love which goes beyond the fall and forgiveness, and forms in the creature the spousal capacity to join Him. In Mary, we can contemplate the rapport between her previous state as “full of grace” and her virginal assent. In John of the Cross we see a faithfulness to the creational project of God, which is spousal and so broad as to enable him to understand in advance every fall, every departure of the Bride. In Teresa of Jesus we can look at the vital experience of mercy that preceded her conversion. In Therese of the Child Jesus we can recall the anticipation of divine love discovered in her theological existence, and which later became a doctrine of universal breadth.

AbstractBeginning with the consideration of Edith Stein’s visit to the Liebieg-museum in Frankfurt, the present contribution seeks to establish an analogy between lived experience of the esthetical and lived experience of the religious. It further, and more precisely, endeavours to consider the relation to a work of art as an encounter implying gratuity, uniqueness, and empathy. In a way similar to encounter in personal relations, the encounter with a work of art can be significant for the discovery and the unfolding of one’s personality.
