Abstract

Abstract

Cet article examinera la présence quasi- mais aussi véritablement impériale du roi ostrogothique Théodoric le Grand (r. 489/493-526) dans la ville de Rome. Malgré l’effondrement de l’Empire romain d’Occident en 476, les fortunes politiques de Rome prospéraient, car un certain nombre d’empereurs du e siècle avaient été élus au sein de l’aristocratie sénatoriale et/ou avaient établi leurs cours dans la Ville jusque-là dédaignée. Alors que le premier roi « barbare » d’Italie, Odoacre (476-489/493), semble s’être démarqué de cette tendance en restant éloigné de Rome, le règne de Théodoric marque d’une certaine manière le retour à la situation politique de la fin de l’Empire d’Occident. En effet, Théodoric accordait beaucoup d’importance à Rome et, comme le montre cet article, ses nombreuses et diverses actions partisanes et sa célèbre visite de 500 (peut-être pas la seule, comme il le sera suggéré) ont beaucoup fait pour légitimer les revendications contemporaines d’ et de ostrogothiques. Les Romains d’Orient avaient fini par affirmer que Rome avait été conquise par les rois gothiques ; à l’inverse cependant et paradoxalement, Théodoric et ses sujets affirmaient que la ville avait été rajeunie par un et restait une Rome invaincue ().
