Ad simplicem usum Juniperi. Junípero Serra (1713-1784) a la luz de su misteriosa biblia

This article sheds light on the Bible that Friar Junípero Serra (1713-1784) hid from the Inquisition in his hometown before traveling to join the missions in New Spain, and relates it to his biography, written by Father Palou (1787). The article first emphasises that this biography was conceived to promote Friar Junípero’s canonisation. With this interpretive key, the episode of the dispute between Friar Junípero and an English captain will be examined as a means to overcome the opposition that the discovery of the Bible Junípero left hidden could offer to the canonisation. Finally, the article also analyses how Father Palou invites us to consider the anecdote as a figure of how the Juniperian American mission would lead to the rejection of heresy in Europe.
