Inscription phénicienne sur une cruche au musée de Nicosie

Une cruche White-Painted IV acquise par le musée de Nicosie porte une courte inscription phénicienne. Un réexamen de cette inscription en révèle le contenu : des pignes de pin provenant de Sidon. Ce faisant, sont identifiés pour la première fois deux nouveaux mots phéniciens, šbr = pigne, ʾr = pin, mots qui devraient entrer dans le vocabulaire du sémitique de l’Ouest. Seule l’abréviation « 5 P » reste plus énigmatique, renvoyant sans doute à une mesure. L’origine sidonienne des pignes a mérité une mention sur la cruche, probablement pour souligner la qualité de ces semences de pin.

A White-Painted IV jug acquired by the Nicosia Museum bears a short Phoenician inscription. A re-examination of this inscription reveals its contents: pine cones from Sidon. In the process, two new Phoenician words are identified for the first time, šbr = pine cone, ʾr = pine, words which should enter the vocabulary of West Semitic. Only the abbreviation “5 P” remains more enigmatic, probably referring to a measure. The Sidonian origin of the pine cone is the object of particular attention on the jug, perhaps emphasizing the quality of the pine seeds from that region.
