Des astres et des étoiles sur les sceaux-cylindres d’Ugarit

La glyptique d’Ugarit a fait l’objet de deux publications, rassemblant les sceaux par matériau puis par groupes chronologiques ou thématiques. À leur suite, une étude s’est attachée à évaluer la place accordée par cette production aux animaux, notamment à l’espèce bovine, symbolique des deux principaux dieux du royaume. À cette occasion, l’hypothèse d’un lien entre le monde animal, le monde végétal et les rites sacrificiels a été avancée au travers de la constatation de l’existence d’une relation préférentielle établie par les sceaux entre ces mondes naturels et celui des astres. Cette proposition nous a conduits à entreprendre une première catégorisation des astres présents sur les sceaux du Bronze récent. Cette entreprise dont cet article présente les premiers résultats est menée dans le cadre d’un projet plus vaste sur les dieux et étoiles, mené avec Arnaud Sérandour et que nous souhaitons dédier à notre ami disparu.

Ugarit seals were published in two volumes, arranged materially and by chronological or thematic groups. A subsequent study attempted to evaluate the place accorded to animals in this corpus, and in particular to bovine species, owing to their religious significance in the context of this kingdom. On this occasion, the hypothesis of a link between the animal kingdom, the vegetable world and the sacrificial rites was proposed on the basis of a preferential link between representations of these natural worlds and the celestial bodies. This hypothesis led us to propose a preliminary typology of the attested celestial bodies on seals in the main Late Bronze Age corpora. This article presents some preliminary results, which, in turn, are part of a broader research project conducted with Arnaud Serandour on gods and stars that we wish to dedicate to our departed friend.
