The Church and Cistercians in Medieval Poland
Foundations, Documents, People
In this volume the research of Józef Dobosz one of Poland’s leading historians of the Middle Ages is made accessible in English for the first time. It brings together nineteen studies focused on the role of the Church the Cistercian Order and other religious institutions in the history of the Piast realm from which Poland emerged. The introduction offers a broad outline of the first two centuries of the rule of the Piast dynasty after the Baptism of Poland in 966 until the fragmentation of the Piast patrimony during the twelfth century. The subsequent essays examine the circumstances of the foundation of Poland’s leading Cistercian monasteries in Sulejów Jędrzejów Wąchock Owińska and Łekno. The author analyses the means of their establishment evaluates the existing sources and places these within the context of the Piast dynasty’s economic political and social policies.
The studies offer an in-depth analysis of the motivations of the leading dynasts magnates and prelates in supporting the mission of the Church in Poland and enabling further embedding of Christianity across all strata of the society. The author examines the oldest Polish documents related to Cistercian monasteries and canons regular (in particular foundation charters) including early medieval charter forgeries. The volume’s key conclusions about the impact of Christianity on nascent Poland are based on a detailed examination of medieval charters the role of scriptoria identities of significant people of the Church and the wider historical record.
Predigen im Karolingerreich
Die homiletischen Sammlungenvon Paulus Diaconus, Lanthpertus von Mondsee, Rabanus Maurus und Haymo von Auxerre
By supporting the Christianization process within their realm Carolingian rulers not only served matters of faith obedience and healing of the soul; they also intended to unify the conquered tribes remove their pagan traditions and strengthen royal power. Carolingian sermon collections provide significant insights into the cultural political and social background to the process of Christianization in the Carolingian world. Five sample collections compiled by leading intellectuals are now explored extensively and comparatively for the first time.
La royauté franque et les origines du culte de saint Germain de Paris (vie-viiie siècles)
The article examines the role played by the first Merovingian kings in the development of the cult of Saint Germain bishop of Paris. Chilpéric I sought to make the saint the patron saint of his family and his city on the model initiated by his father Clotaire I at Saint-Médard in Soissons. He was responsible for the burial considered temporary of Germain at Saint-Vincent as well as an unfinished project for a personal funerary basilica. The veneration continued at the court of his descendants Clotaire II and Dagobert with Bertrand of Le Mans and Saint Éloi sketching out a cult with a very Parisian anchorage. The arrival of the Carolingians confirms the dynastic nature of that devotion. The translation of the relics of the saint in 755 is the final endorsement: the presence of Pépin le Bref at that ceremony reflects the new dynasty’s policy of legitimisation through veneration of the main Merovingian saints.
Restauration monastique et reconstitution des trésors de reliques au xixe siècle : l’exemple de l’abbaye Saint-Martin de Ligugé et de ses fondations
If the monastic restorations undertaken in the 19th century reflect a desire to maintain a liturgical and spiritual line of descent from the monasticism of preceding periods especially the Middle Ages the preoccupation of the refounders was not limited only to these aspects but examined all aspects of ancient monastic life. The recuperation and renewed celebration of the relics that were preserved took on new importance particularly in the young congregation of Solesmes. Taking as a point of departure the example of a fragment of the “True Cross” that came from the ancient Benedictine abbey of Noyon and ended up in the abbey of Ligugé as well as other relics obtained or acquired by Solesmes and its foundations (Silos Saint-Wandrille) before the expulsions in 1901 one better understands what motivated Benedictine abbots to obtain these fragments for their new reliquaries. Far from expressing any morbid taste for these objects as is often supposed the reconstitution of the relic treasuries was inspired by a wider vision a will to reunite with an often idealised past but also to influence the religious life and even the society of its time.
Saint Étienne ou sainte Marie ? Un vieux débat à refermer : « Le vocable de la cathédrale de Paris à l’époque franque »
In 1925 Léon Levillain published a study on “The dedication of the cathedral of Paris in the Frankish period” where he concluded that “Saint Stephen was the original patron of the Parisian church” - a dedication attested in the Merovingian period. He rejected the conclusions of Victor Mortet who maintained in his Étude historique et archéologique sur la cathédrale et le palais épiscopal de Paris du VIe au XIIe siècle published in 1888 that Sainte Marie had always been the main patron of the cathedral of Paris - a dedication unknown before the last third of the 8th century. The thesis of L. Levillain is nowadays commonly accepted. Nevertheless a reexamination of texts from the 6th-9th century cited in the debate and a deconstruction of the argument of L. Levillain lead to a dismissal of his conclusions and a return to those of V. Mortet on the continual preeminence of Sainte Marie in the dedication of the cathedral of Paris from the moment when the dedication is first known and during the Carolingian period.

Ebrelmus, moine clunisien auteur de la Translatio sancti Indalecii (BHL 4270), et Ezelon, moine clunisien auteur d’une Vita perdue d’Hugues de Semur
In 2017 the authors of this note published in the journal Hagiographica a new edition of the Translatio sancti Indalecii (BHL 4270) a text composed in Aragon in the late 11th century. The origin of two verses in the prologue which escaped them at the time proves to be particularly interesting: Ebrelmus the hagiographer used the Vita tertia metrica sancti Lamberti (BHL 4682) a rare work composed in Liège at the beginning of the 10th century. We know that Ebrelmus was a monk at Cluny. At the same time there was a hagiographer from Liège in the Burgundian monastery a certain Ezelo who was both master of the works for Cluny III and author of the lost Vita of Hugues de Semur. This discovery both confirms the authenticity of the Translatio Indalecii and poses the question still unresolved of the relation between Ebrelmus and Ezelo.
A Prayer for Wisdom: Dominican Educational Ambitions under Humbert de Romans
Humbert de Romans served as master-general of the Dominican Order from 1254-1264 that is during a period of generational change for the mendicants. In 1259 the Order of Preachers implemented sweeping regulations on its system of schools seemingly at Humbert’s insistence. This paper argues that Humbert’s educational reforms aimed not only to prepare friars for pastoral work but also perfected the order’s administrative operation and enhanced its social and political presence. A Dominican education trained conventual priors readers of theology and general preachers all of whom performed important roles in the order’s administration and governance. Precepts of logic philosophy and theology were the immediate aims for the educational system but it was the formation of a complete social institution which was the ultimate motive inspiring Dominican learning.

Un fragment d’ordinaire à l’usage de l’abbaye bénédictine de Chanteuges
Two leaves in the Bibliothèque nationale de France (ms. lat. 16814 fol. 5-6v) preserve the trace of an enquiry launched by P. Lebrun at the beginning of the 18th century. It contains the copy of some specific elements of the liturgy of the abbey of Chanteuges (diocese of Clermont) which was founded in 936 by Brioude and became a dependency of the Chaise-Dieu in 1137. To identify and date the original manuscript the analysis focuses mostly on three solemnities and draws some conclusions: the specificity of a Chaise-Dieu liturgical connection for an All Souls’ feast day on 14 January must be reexamined; the confrontation of the Vita of Marcellin (BHL 5227) with one of the capitals in the abbey shows up divergencies which perhaps liturgical elements could have clarified; the comparison of the ritual for Palm Sunday - a standard usage - with the phases of construction of the abbey allows us to date the original liber ordinarius to the 1500s. The Ordinal was undoubtedly made at the behest of the abbot of the Chaise-Dieu Jacques de Saint-Nectaire who had just modified the architectural disposition of Chanteuges. A critical edition of the two leaves completes the study.
Lost and Bound: A Thirteenth-Century Manuscript of the Vie d’Isabelle de France by Agnes of Harcourt
No medieval copies of the French biography (Vie d’Isabelle de France) of Isabelle of France written by Agnes of Harcourt around 1283 have survived to this day. Our knowledge of this text and its circulation in late medieval France has primarily relied on modern copies and archival evidence. In this article I present a newly discovered thirteenth-century fragment of the Vie d’Isabelle bound with a manuscript of the Image du monde by Gossuin de Metz (Chantilly musée Condé 477). Through a codicological paleographical and textual analysis of the two units that constitute this manuscript - the fragment of the Vie d’Isabelle and the complete copy of the Image du monde - I demonstrate that this fragment is the trace of a now-lost manuscript which had been produced in Paris soon after the completion of the Vie d’Isabelle. Chantilly 477 therefore offers a new piece of evidence for the earliest circulation of Agnes of Harcourt’s text beyond the walls of the abbey of Longchamp.
La résignation des abbés et prieurs : vieillesse, infirmité et indiscipline chez les chanoines réguliers et les bénédictins anglais (xiie-xive siècle)
During the Middle Ages old or infirm abbots and priors whether regular canons or Benedictines could ask their bishop to relieve them of their charge. This procedure which is part of the arsenal of measures foreseen by the Church in cases of incapacity to fulfil the duties of one’s office or as a means of rewarding deserving elderly prelates could also serve to remove from office those who were condemned for a grievous fault. In England if resignation is already well known in the 11th and 12th century we have more detailed knowledge in the 13th century due to increased documentation. Old age sickness infirmity and even merit were legitimate reasons for abandoning a charge; undisciplined behaviour for the deposition of a prelate. These procedures were soon abused: early departures without a true motive forced resignations. The attribution of pensions and provisions for the maintenance of old abbots and priors weighed on the finances of communities when departures were too closely spaced. The old prelates were provided with special living conditions including their own apartments servants and various provisions. The pension systematic with the regular canons becomes widespread with the Benedictines in the 14th century. Some remain in their institution others change communities and even orders; delinquent prelates are often sent far away and sometimes remain the source of grave disorders for years to come.

Re-examining Theological Encounters with Dance in Medieval Europe
This book is a conversation starter. The author is re-imagining the theological landscape of historical practices of dance in order to open up a space where further explorations can be made. This is done in a two step manner. First the book uncovers the restrictions of earlier research on the topic of dance in and around churches. In the second step Hellsten suggests a practice for how historical sources can be imagined in a new frame. Opening up a new field of previously neglected and much needed historical studies on Dance in the Christian churches of the Latin West this study aims at questioning old paradigms and opening new vistas rather than reinterpreting concrete liturgical manuscripts or scrutinizing all the details of the historical sources presented.
The Donner Institute for Research in Religion and Culture in Turku Finland has awarded its Nordic Research Prize 2021 to Dr. theol. Laura Hellsten for her creative research widening our understanding of sacral dance in general and of the role of dance in the Christian church in particular.
