Reworking the Virtutes apostolorum in the Salzburg Sermon-Collection (1^st quarter of the ninth century)

The oldest extant manuscripts of the Virtutes apostolorum are Bavarian and date to the ninth century. Elements of the collection, however, also appear in earlier Bavarian compilations, such as a hagiographical collection from the monastery of Benediktbeuren, dating to the last quarter of the eighth century, or a Salzburg collection of sermons from the first quarter of the eighth century. The latter is of particular interest, as individual ‘Acts’ have been abridged and adapted to fit the sermons in which they appear. This essay examines the various compilers’ methods of revision and adaptation, and uses this to identify their particular individual concerns. The reworking of the Virtutes in the Salzburg Sermonary can be seen as part of a broader strategy of the Bavarian metropolitan to control and use hagiography as a tool for correction. The compiler adapted the texts to serve as a basis for moral admonition and for the instruction of relatively recently converted Christians. He reshaped or omitted passages to avoid ambiguity and potentially difficult discussions, for example regarding the exact degree of consanguinity between Jesus and Jacobus or the heavenly letters associated with Thaddaeus.

Les plus anciens manuscrits conservés des Virtutes apostolorum sont bavarois et datent du ix^e siècle. Cependant, des éléments de la collection apparaissent aussi dans des compilations bavaroises antérieures, comme dans une collection hagiographique du monastère de Benediktbeuren, datant du dernier quart du viii^e siècle, ou une collection de sermons de Salzbourg du premier quart du viii^e siècle. Cette dernière présente un intérêt particulier, car des ‘‘Actes’’ individuels ont été abrégés et remaniés pour s’adapter aux semons dans lesquels ils sont insérés. Cet article examine les diverses méthodes de révision et d’adaptation des compilateurs, afin d’identifier leurs préoccupations. Le remaniement des Virtutes dans le Sermonaire de Salzbourg pourrait relever d’une stratégie plus large du métropolitain bavarois pour contrôler et utiliser l’hagiographie comme un outil de correction. Le compilateur a revu les textes pour qu’ils servent de base à une exhortation morale et à l’instruction de chrétiens récemment convertis. Il a remodelé ou a omis des passages afin d’éviter des ambiguïtés et des discussions qui pourraient être difficiles, notamment au sujet du degré de consanguinité entre Jésus et Jacques ou au sujet des lettres célestes associées à Thaddée.
