The Genre of the Acts of Andrew

The Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles have generally been located within the genre of novels. In this paper, the author attempts to question the validity of such a conclusion by examining one of these Acts─the Acts of Andrew. Utilizing a relational model of genre classification, he attempts to locate the Acts of Andrew within the trajectory of the biographies of philosophers. Aspects of both the structure and content of the Acts of Andrew are examined; and the Sitz im Leben of this work is also discussed in relation to its genre. In the final section, the generic relationship between biographies and novels is noted.

Les Actes apocryphes des Apôtres sont généralement classés dans la catégorie des nouvelles. Dans cet article, I'auteur se demande si une telle conclusion est toujours fondée en examinant un de ces Actes─les Actes d'André. Utilisant un modèle relationnel comme genre de classification, il essaye de situer les Actes d'André dans la lignée des biographies des philosophes. Des aspects de la structure et du contenu des Actes d'André sont analysés; et Ie Sitz im Leben de ce travail est aussi discuté en relation avec son genre. Dans la dernière partie, la relation générique entre les biographies et les nouvelles est notée.
