Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

In the writings of Qumran the figure of Elijah occasionally appears but two fragmentary texts are relevant to characterize more precisely the function of Elijah according to the Essene movement (yaḥad): 4Q521 and 4Q558. The first text appears to be an eschatological composition with a protagonist looking like Elijah. The second text in Aramaic is damaged but it contains the name of Elijah. Both texts may allow one to identify the anonymous figure of the “prophet” in 1QS 9:11 as the “new Elijah.”
