Judas the Galilean and the Many Stories of the Jewish War

L’inadéquation est remarquable entre le personnage historique de Judas le Galiléen, presque inconnu, et l’exceptionnelle ampleur de la littérature scientifique le concernant. Peu de sources existent, qui fournissent à son sujet des informations vagues et incertaines. Dans cet article, on fait le tour de ces données, de toutes les questions que ces sources soulèvent, ainsi que des interprétations diverses qui ont été construites dans l’historiographie. On démontre que l’image que chaque historien se fait de Judas le Galiléen correspond à une version particulière de l’histoire juive, qu’il soit perçu comme l’initiateur direct de la résistance menant à la grande révolte, qu’il soit pensé comme un individu à peine notable, ou quelque autre scénario entre ces deux extrêmes.

There is a remarkable gap between the almost unknown historical figure of Judas the Galilean and the exceptionally extensive scientific literature on him. Few sources exist, providing vague and uncertain information about him. In this paper, I look at these data, at all the questions that these sources raise, and at the various interpretations that have been proposed in scholarship. I demonstrate that the idea that each scholar has of Judas the Galilean corresponds to a singular version of Jewish history, whether he is perceived as the direct initiator of the violence leading to the Jewish War or whether he is thought of as a barely notable individual, or some other scenario between these two extremes.
