Nouvelles données concernant la reprise de Vatican I sous Pie XI

Dans l’encyclique Ubi arcano (1922), Pie XI annonçait son intention de reprendre le Concile Vatican I. Finalement, son désir n’a pu se réaliser. Néanmoins, pendant les deux premières années de son Pontificat, quelques actions furent entreprises en vue de reprendre le Concile: consultation des cardinaux de la Curie, des évêques, et surtout institution d’une Commission de théologiens qui puisse non seulement mettre en ordre les Archives du Concile Vatican I, mais rédiger aussi un résumé des thèmes en attente et présenter une proposition des thèmes à développer. L’activité hésitante et incertaine de cette Commission, menée certainement en correspondance avec celle de la Secrétairerie d’État et celle du pape, convaincu de l’opportunité de reprendre le Concile Vatican I, fait l’objet d’étude de cet article. Dans cet article, nous allons exposer l’itinéraire suivi par cette Commission depuis sa constitution jusqu’à sa dissolution. De même, une documentation inédite sur cet épisode du Pontificat de Pie XI est disposée en annexe.

In the Encyclical Ubi arcano (1922), Pius XI announced his intention to resume the First Vatican Council. In the end, he was unable to carry out this wish. However, in the first two years of his pontificate he did take steps with a view to resuming the Council: he consulted with cardinals of the curia and with bishops, and instituted a commission of theologians charged with putting order in the Archives of the Vatican Council, presenting a summary of pending issues, and proposing themes that needed development. The activity of this commission, which is the present article’s object of study, was hesitant and erratic — possibly reflecting the attitude of the Secretary of State as well as of the Pope himself regarding the convenience of resuming the Vatican Council. In the article we follow the itinerary of the commission from its inception until its dissolution and, in an Appendix, present hitherto unpublished documents related to this episode of Pius XI’s pontificate.

In den Enzyclica Ubi arcano (1922) gab Pius XI. seine Absicht der Weiterführung des ersten Vatikanischen Konzils bekannt, konnte aber letztlich diesen Wunsch nicht verwirklichen. Trotzdem unternahm er in den ersten beiden Jahren seines Pontifikats verschiedene Schritte in dieser Hinsicht: eine Befragung der Kurienkardinäle und Bischöfe und die Gründung einer Kommission von Theologen, die das Archiv des ersten Vaticanums ordnen, eine Liste der nicht behandelten Themen erstellen und Themenvorschläge für die neue Phase erbringen sollten. Die Tätigkeit dieser Kommission — womit sich diese Studie befasst — war zögernd und schwankend, wahrscheinlich als Folge der Einstellung des Staatssekretariats sowie des Papstes selbst bezüglich des geeigneten Zeitpunkts für einen Wiederbeginn des Konzils. In diesem Aufsatz wird der Verlauf dieser Kommission von ihrem Beginn bis zur Auflösung untersucht, mit einem Anhang von bisher unveröffentlichten Dokumenten über diese Episode des Pontifikats Pius XI.
