Une nouvelle hypothèse sur le titre des Psaumes manichéens dits de Thomas

This paper proposes a re-examination of the accepted rendering of the title given in the manuscript to the last 20 psalms of the 2nd part of the Manichaean Psalmbook, the Psalms of Thomas. It is argued that this Thomas cannot be identified either with the homonymous Mani’s disciple or with the Apostle Thomas, and a new interpretation of the Coptic word thōm is offered.

Le but de cet article est d’examiner la signification du titre – enpsalmos enthōm – attribué dans le manuscrit aux vingt derniers psaumes de la seconde partie du psautier manichéen, titre rendu par Allberry par Psaumes de Thomas. Depuis Allberry, on a considéré généralement ce Thomas comme étant soit le disciple de Mani connu sous ce nom, soit l’apôtre Thomas. Après avoir passé en revue les raisons invoquées pour l’une ou l’autre attribution, nous essaierons de montrer que ni l’une ni l’autre ne s’imposent, et qu’il convient de chercher à expliquer autrement ce titre.
