The Miracles of Jesus : An Ethiopian Apocryphal Gospel

The apocryphon in question tells the story of Jesus in 40 to 80 (depending on the division system) episodes called « miracles ». Most of the text is a translation of the Arabic apocryphal Gospel of John, which was composed in the 10th/11th C. on the basis of the canonical gospels and apocrypha, as for instance the Protevangelium of James, the Acts of Pilate, an account of the Magi, the Cave of Treasures, the Apocalypse of Pseudo- Methodius. All the sources are reworked and together with several original « miracles », often involving animals, make up a new apocryphal narrative. To the Ethiopic translation (of the 14th C.) the Infancy Gospel of Thomas and the Letters of Abgar and Jesus were subsequently added.

L' apocryphe en question rapporte l'histoire de Jésus en 40 à 80 (en fonction du système de division) épisodes appelés « miracles ». Le texte est principalement une traduction de l'apocryphe arabe de l'Évangile de Jean, qui a été écrit au Xe / Xle siècle sur la base des évangiles canoniques et apocryphes, comme par exemple Ie Protévangile de Jacques, les Actes de Pilate, un Récit sur les Mages, la Caverne des Trésors, l'Apocalypse du Pseudo-Méthode. Toutes les sources ont été remaniées avec plusieurs autres « miracles », incluant souvent des animaux; elles ont été mises en forme ainsi dans un nouvel apocryphe narratif. A la traduction éthiopienne (du XIVe siècle) ont été ajoutés ultérieurement l'Évangile de l'enfance de Thomas et les Lettres d' Abgar et de Jésus.
