« De l’Évangile de Nicodème au Roman de la Résurrection d'André de Coutances »

The Romanz Mestre Andreu, or la Résurrection by André de Coutances is a 2040 octosyllable translation of the Gospel of Nichodemus. The author says nothing about the episode of the Passion but attaches much importance to prove the Resurection. The many changes executed bring us to consider that André de Coutances accomplishes, in the Roman de la Résurrection, a work of compilation, according to the principle of inventio. Besides, he leaves out important passages which he judged irrelevant or in contradiction with the religious thought of the 13th century. While taking his rank in the lineage of the translations and adaptations, this text foreshadows the French Passions and Christian Dramas to come.

L 'auteur y tail l'épisode de la Passion du Christ mais s 'attache à prouver la Résurrection2 . Les nombreux remaniements qu 'il effectue nous amènent à penser qu 'André de Coutances réalise dans le Roman de la Résurrection un véritable travail de compilation, selon un principe d'inventio, excluant de son texte ce qu 'il a jugé inutile ou en désaccord avec la pensée religieuse du XIIIe siècle. Dans une continuité de traduction et d'adaptation, ce texte préfigure les Passions et les Mystères à venir.
