Abstract

Abstract

Cet article veut d’une part établir les bases permettant d’expliquer l’appartenance de l’art omeyyade à la koine méditerranéenne de l’Antiquité tardive, d’autre part explorer une autre fonction du salon des bains omeyyades de Khirbat al-Mafjar (Palestine) à la lumière des études sur l’architecture des espaces du savoir des périodes classique et de l’Antiquité tardive. Cette analyse repose sur une ré-évaluation du bâtiment lui-même, en particulier sur certaines caractéristiques architecturales (grande salle avec absides, niches non ornementales, podium périmétral, petit salle semblable à un akroateion/auditorium) et sur une ré-interprétation de l’iconographie du salon des bains, qui peut être rapprochée des espaces du savoir, des bibliothèques, des arts littéraires et de la recherche scientifique dans la tradition du bain-gymnasion hellénique ou des thermes romains impériaux, qui renferment des bibliothèques et des akroatearia / auditoria.
