Knapped Tools for Obtaining Food Resources in the Origins of Farming in the Near East

In the Near East, the Fertile Crescent was the area where the economic, social and ideological changes representing the transition from nomadic hunter-gatherer to sedentary farming societies first appeared, between 12300 and 7000 BC. Knapped flint and obsidian tools underwent complex technological changes, reflecting the important social transformations that occurred during this transition. In this article, we provide an overview of the current state of knowledge of the lithic tools used in food procurement and processing during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic in the Near East, focusing on three tool categories: sickles, projectile weapons and butchering knives. We explain how the transition to farming, with new economics needs, affected the characteristics of knapped tools and how the process of production, provision and use of tools was organized in a society in continuous change.

Au Proche-Orient, les changements économiques, sociaux et idéologiques qui caractérisent l’émergence des premières communautés agricoles sédentaires sont apparus dans le Croissant Fertile entre 12 300 et 7 000 avant Jésus-Christ. Les outillages en silex et en obsidienne de ces sociétés ont subi des évolutions technologiques complexes, qui reflètent les importantes transformations sociales qui ont eu lieu pendant cette transition. Dans cet article, nous donnons un aperçu de l’état actuel des connaissances sur les outils lithiques taillés utilisés pour l’approvisionnement et la transformation des aliments durant le Néolithique pré-céramique au Proche-Orient, en nous concentrant sur trois catégories d’outils : les faucilles, les pointes de flèches et les couteaux de boucherie. Nous expliquons comment la transition vers l’agriculture, qui implique de nouveaux besoins économiques, a affecté les caractéristiques de l’outillage et comment les processus de production, d’approvisionnement et d’utilisation des outils étaient organisés dans une société en constante évolution.
