Enlightenment and Linseed Oil: Conflicts over Fasting Rigour in Eighteenth-Century Poland–Lithuania

This article reveals the enduring religious and political potency of Roman Catholic fasting in the eighteenth century. Using the example of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth while attending to the context of Enlightenment Europe, it analyses how Catholic rigorists asserted their agenda by focusing on fasting. Rigorists and their adversaries invested in this topic because it touched on key issues of taste, health and, above all, national identity. In particular, the defenders of fasting rigorism in Poland–Lithuania successfully valorized local popular custom, which favoured oil from linseed and similar locally grown plants over butter and olive oil. Conflicts over fasting thus play a significant role in the genealogy of conservative Catholic populism. Through the study of fasting rigorism, food history can respond to the current challenge of recasting the eighteenth century as a time in which plural Enlightenments and Counter-Enlightenments co-produced change by confronting and influencing each other.

Cet article montre que, dans le catholicisme latin du XVIII^e siècle, le jeûne continuait à façonner puissamment le religieux et le politique. Analysé dans le contexte des Lumières européennes, l’exemple de la Pologne-Lituanie illustre comment les rigoristes catholiques se saisirent du problème du jeûne pour promouvoir leurs idées. Les rigoristes et leurs adversaires voyaient dans ce sujet une clé pour penser la santé, le goût, et surtout l’identité nationale. En particulier, les défenseurs du jeûne rigoureux en Pologne-Lituanie surent valoriser des coutumes populaires locales, lesquelles favorisaient l’huile de lin et de plantes similaires aux dépens du beurre et de l’huile d’olive. Ces conflits autour du jeûne ont leur place dans la généalogie du populisme catholique conservateur. En étudiant le rigorisme, l’histoire de l’alimentation peut répondre à un grand défi actuel : relire le XVIII^e siècle comme une époque où le changement culturel s’opérait à travers affrontements et influences réciproques entre les Lumières et les Contre-Lumières.
