Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This paper engages with the question whether there is any correspondence between the types of priesthood, priestliness and priestly functions in Second Temple Judaism and the widely accepted view that there were at least two explanations for the origins of evil at the time (Adam’s disobedience or fallen angels). Priestly aspects of figures from Adam to Zadok and from Aaron to the Moreh Zedek are described and evaluated. It is proposed that in the Enoch-Noah pattern of priesthood there is a theme of apotropaic esoterica in books, whereas in the Adamic-Aaronic pattern there is a concern to deal with human sin. There are also various combinations of the two patterns.
